Safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children is defined as:

protecting children from maltreatment

preventing impairment of children’s health or development

ensuring children are growing up in circumstances consistent with the provision of safe and effective care.


Child protection is a part of safeguarding and promoting welfare. It refers to the activity that is undertaken to protect specific children who are suffering, or are likely to suffer, significant harm.


Effective child protection is essential as part of wider work to safeguard and promote the welfare of children. However, all agencies and individuals should aim to proactively safeguard and promote the welfare of children so that the need for action to protect children from harm is reduced.

The aim of this policy is to safeguard and promote our pupil’s welfare, safety, health and guidance by fostering an honest, open caring and supportive climate with clear and well articulated policies and procedures which are understood and applied by all staff. 

The pupil’s welfare is of paramount importance.

Inaura School fully recognises the responsibility it has under the Education Act 2002 and the contribution it can make to protect children and support pupils in school.

All staff involved with children (teaching and non-teaching) have a responsibility to be mindful of issues related to children’s safety and welfare and a duty to report and refer any concerns. This policy applies to all adults, including volunteers, working in or on behalf of the school.

Everyone working in or for our school service shares an objective to help keep children and young people safe by contributing to:

providing a safe environment for children and young people to learn and develop in our school setting, and

identifying children and young people who are suffering or likely to suffer significant harm, and taking appropriate action with the aim of making sure they are kept safe both at home and in our school setting

Prevention through the teaching and pastoral support offered to the pupils within the whole school protective ethos.

Protection by following agreed procedures, ensuring staff are appropriately recruited, trained and supported to respond appropriately and sensitively to Child Protection concerns.

Support to pupils who may have been abused.


School commitment

Inaura School is committed to Safeguarding and Promoting the Welfare of all of its pupils. 

We recognise that some children may be especially vulnerable to abuse.  

We recognise that children who are abused or neglected may find it difficult to develop a sense of self worth and to view the world in a positive way. 

Whilst at school, their behaviour may be challenging. 

We recognise that some children who have experienced abuse may harm others. We will always take a considered and sensitive approach in order that we can support all of our pupils.



This document is an umbrella policy which brings together all the key policies and procedures relevant to safeguarding children. 

a. Safeguarding themes are identified in the spider diagram above.


b. Our safeguarding schema summarises the 12 themes in our safeguarding policy, the areas covered, the associated policy documents and a list of other relevant documents used in connection with each area.


c. The executive summaries describes each theme and gives an outline of its functions, management, administration and accountabilities. 


d. This policy continues to develop.  The development path is described in our Safeguarding development plan. This plan also details professional our development framework and arrangements for training, staff support and quality control.


Our complete safeguarding strategy comprises this umbrella policy, the policies in the policy scheme listed below (grouped under ‘themes’), and the related documents, forms and procedural guidelines associated with each policy.


Safeguarding Executive accountability

The Headteacher will ensure that:

the policies, procedures and development plans adopted by the Trustees are fully implemented, and followed by all staff;

sufficient resources and time are allocated to enable the designated person and other staff to discharge their responsibilities including taking part in strategy discussions and other inter-agency meetings and contributing to the assessments of children.

all staff and volunteers feel able to raise concerns about poor or unsafe practice in regard to children, and such concerns are addressed sensitively and effectively in a timely manner in accordance with agreed whistle blowing policies.
